They say a good work of art transcends the bounds of time and space. William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Macbeth continues to affirm these simple truths years after it was first introduced to the world. I have recently watched The Tragedy of Macbeth which features Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand. The black and white cinematography, the soundtrack, as well as the performance by the cast brought Shakespeare back to life. The story is also a depiction of the genius blend of prose and verse in a literary piece whose relevance only continues to grow over the years. It is no wonder that The Tragedy of Macbeth is once again adapted into a movie. Renowned actor Denzel Washington beautifully plays the character of Macbeth while Lady Macbeth’s role is performed by Frances McDormand.
Most amusing and fascinating in the movie was the selection of Denzel Washington to play the lead role of Macbeth. Both the director Joel Coen and Denzel Washington made a bold decision to have an African American play the role of Macbeth who was supposed to be a white king from Scotland. Moreover, Frances McDormand is also globally recognized for her stellar performance in rebellious and headstrong roles.
The movie’s use of ravens is symbolic. Evil and sinister are the two that perfectly describe the raven and the various scenes in The Tragedy of Macbeth. The black and white cinematography and the soundtrack constantly kept me a the edge of my seat throughout the movie. Additionally, the director’s choice of costume and props was appropriate to the time the play was set.
Murder is strongly depicted in several instances in The Tragedy of Macbeth. Macbeth ascends to the throne when he murders king Duncan. It is the first of many murders that follow and also the highlight of his reign as King. He who lives by the sword dies by the sword.
Throughout the whole movie, the cast stopped at nothing to bring life into the movie. Despite the centuries that have passed, the relevance of The Tragedy of Macbeth remains just as significant. It is indeed one of the greatest works of art from William Shakespeare.
